- In May 2008, we embarked on a 37,000km adventure around the whole of Australia. The mission we set ourselves was to attempt to travel around Australia in a fun, alternative way. We decided to use waste vegetable oil from roadhouses and fish & chip shops to fuel our second hand 4WD (which we called “the Battered Fish” due to the aroma that ascended from the exhaust!), stay in bush camps as much as possible, use bio-degradable products, cook over camp fires, use solar-panels to power the fridge and electrical equipment, catch our own dinner and buy local produce. The adventure finished on 23 December 2008. We travelled just under 37,000 kms, the majority of which was on waste cooking oil. We managed to reach the most Eastern, Northern, Western and Southern points of mainland Australia, do some challenging 4WDriving through creek crossings, over sand dunes and muddy clay, stayed in some unbelievably beautiful bush camps and met some amazing locals (including quite a few crocs!). "The Battered Fish"
A 1995 Toyota Landcruiser Troopcarrier. We purchased the car in April 2008 and converted the engine so that it could run on WVO, added a solar panel to the roof, changed all the filters, oil, tyres and injectors, added a HF Radio for communication and brought all the recovery gear. The car already had an UHF radio, storage drawers, extra suspension, dual batteries, dual fuel tank and a snorkel. At the start of the trip, there were already 366,250 kms on the clock! Fully loaded, it weighs about 3.5 tonnes.

An off-road Camper 9 camper trailer from Kangaroo Tent City. We added an additional canvas sunroom so that we can eat in this area without insects bothering us and also a kitchen which has a sink, work bench and drawers.
